KAUAI - ID#A375839

I am an unaltered female, brown Quarter Horse.

The shelter staff think I am about 8 years old.

I have been at the shelter since Jan 31, 2006.

This information is 1 hour old.
Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
Kauai is a Chestnut Quarter type mare. She has no white markings, but has a double whorl on her forehead. She had a puncture wound to her Right Rear leg when she came in, but was very good about treatment and has healed well. She is easy to catch, leads well and loads in a stock trailer. She accepts a saddle and rider, but needs more work on the bit.

Kauai – has been tested for HYPP (because she had a very strange whinny) and is Positive/Negative. Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis Disease is a muscular disease. It is caused by a genetic defect that disrupts the regulation of sodium flow and causes uncontrolled muscle twitching or muscle weakness. Management consists of regular feeding, access to water at all times and exercise. They do well on a diet of grass hay or pasture. Oats are best for a concentrate. They also need access to white salt and not the mineral blocks. A line of quarter horses are known for being more prone to this disease. Most of these horses are ridden or shown and do well in their tasks. The University of California genetics lab has more information on HYPP (www.vgl.ucdavis.edu). Kauai is still quiet and easy going and ready to work with.

10/30/08: Kauai has been ridden some more and has proved to be very easy going, but stubborn at times. She needs more work moving off the bit and would probably make a good trail horse. She has been ridden by beginners, both in the indoor arena and outside.

Adoption Fee: $450
